The genetic material is DNA. The determination of the Structure suggested how it might serve as genetic information. Proof that the genetic material served as a template for DNA replication confirmed these ideas.
DNA controls an organisms phenotype by the synthesis of RNA, a process called RNA transcription. This molecule then functions to convert the nucleic acid sequence into the amino acid sequences of Proteins. Deciphering the Genetic Code showed how a sequence of bases in DNA and RNA could determine a sequence of amino acids in a protein molecule.

DNA is a Double Helix, with bases to the center (like rungs on a ladder) and sugar-phosphate units along the sides of the helix (like the sides of a twisted ladder). The strands are complementary A pairs with T. and C pairs with G. If we know the base sequence of one strand we know its complement.
