RECENT CLASS EVENTS - Classroom duties.

W-SR Biology students will be required to complete classroom duties in addition to their academic responsibilities. These duties will be taken care of mostly outside of class. Several class periods will be maintaining our fish tanks. One class will be caring for the Biology greenhouse. The purpose for this program is multifaceted. Why are classroom duties a significant part of our Biology experience?

RESPONSIBILITY.

Mugan’s class focus. We have always looked to develop responsibility for homework, test preparation, and projects. Now, care of a classroom object or area increases student responsibility.
A major focus for W-SR since 1998. As seen by the implementation of Student planners and Classroom planning procedures.
An area of evaluation for our NCA accreditation.

OWNERSHIP.

Each class period and each student has some ownership for a part of the Biology classroom.

This builds student pride in the appearance of their classroom.

QUALITY.

Pride and ownership contribute to quality. We are looking for quality throughout our Biology experience.

A Quality environment

Quality can be difficult to assess academically. Fish tanks are either cared for or not. Plants are either well pruned or not. Their appearance is immediate evidence of the quality of effort being given.

KNOWLEDGE.

Familiarity with species of fish that are native to Iowa.

Understanding of the balance needed in a captive environment.

Experience with fish tank care.

Regular Plant care practice.

Experience with plant propagation.

PREPARATION.

Those students who go on to take Biology II will be expected to care for the tank we currently have at Southeast school in the Kindergarten classroom. They will need to be able to do this without supervision.

All students will prepare for those life responsibilities that will regularly confront them.
