PAUL MUGAN - A BRIEF HISTORY

Fall of 2023 will be my 33rd year as a secondary science teacher and my 25th year at W-SR. Before returning to Waverly, I taught in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1991-1999. I have taught: General Science, Biology, Biology 2, AP Biology, Environmental Science, Science Issues, Human Anatomy and Chemistry. I have taught Environmental Science online through the University of Phoenix and Intro to online teaching at UW Stout. In the Fall of 2022 I taught Into to Secondary Education at Wartburg. I am honored to have been named Wartburg College's 2018 High School Teacher of the Year.

I am a 1991 Graduate of Wartburg College with a degree in Biology. My Masters degree was finished in December of 2008 through the University of Wisconsin - Stout. UW Stout's program is entirely online and has influenced my teaching profoundly! My Masters research investigated the affect of Blended Learning on the achievement and attitudes of high school biology students. In addition, I have done graduate work at the University of Iowa, Drake, and UNI. In 2014, I earned a Graduate Certificate in E-Learning and Online Teaching from UW Stout. In the last few years, I have completed two Iowa STEM summer Externships for the DNR and UNI's Tallgrass Prairie Center.

At W-SR, I keep several fish tanks in my classroom ranging in size from 55 to 125 gallons. In addition to classroom duties, I was chosen as a lead teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. I have participated in WSR's Technology committee, K-12 Science Curriculum Committee, Rocky Mountain Alpine Studies trip, and I was a four year member of our schools Reading in the Content area team. I also monitored two local streams for over 10 years as a part of the IOWATER water monitoring program. I was also a three year member of our district's E2T2 team which focused on bringing transformative technology uses to our faculty.

Most recently, I have been focused on Blended Learning. I have traveled Iowa showing others how to teach with a Blended format I have worked with other educators at iPadU in Cedar Rapids, the local 1:1 Conference in Cedar Falls, and the Iowa 1:1 Conference in Des Moines. In addition, I have been honored to be asked to present at the ITEC Conference in Des Moines in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019.

I am originally from Mason City, Iowa. My wife Beth (Wartburg College class of 1990) is a math teacher at Tripoli High School. We have one daughter, Anna (Wartburg College class of 2020) who is student teaching this spring! Our family is completed with Gracie Mae the Long Haired Chihuahua who is 10 pounds of fur and fury.
